Tiburon set to expand police, double spending on infrastructure
Tiburon plans to double spending toward infrastructure, expand the police force and formally reorganize Town Hall under a $22.92-million budget proposal as officials remain optimistic about the town’s continued recovery from the economic impacts of the pandemic.
The preliminary fiscal 2023 budget, reviewed by the Town Council at its June 1 meeting, shows a $15.23 million operating budget against $15.29 million in revenue, for a surplus of $50,783. The remaining $7.7 million in appropriations from the overall municipal budget goes toward capital improvements, equipment expenses and pass-through debt service.
To achieve a surplus in a year of planned heavy spending on infrastructure projects, the town did make some precise cuts, mainly by suspending its annual optional additional contribution to its pension trust. Since the town established the pension trust in 2019, annual contributions have ranged from $50,000 to $200,000.
The proposed budget includes a 2.75-percent raise for police officers and a $250,000 allocation to create a captain position; continued contributions to the Yellow Bus Challenge; the town’s final scheduled contribution to the Belvedere-Tiburon Library expansion; and a near-doubling in annual dues to the Richardson Bay Regional Agency at $162,500.
