Crime in Tiburon fell 26% in 2025 as 2024’s theft spike receded, while Belvedere matched its record low of nine total crimes, none violent, mirroring continued declines across California and Marin.
Tiburon recorded 75 violent and property crimes, the fourth-lowest total in 41 years of state data, according to California Department of Justice figures released July 1. The drop returns the town to the range of 2021-2023, when it set three consecutive record lows of 74, 72 and 69, and erases most of 2024’s jump to 102, an 11-year high driven by shoplifting and thefts from vehicles.
The 2025 total also sits below every pre-pandemic year; the town recorded 82 crimes in 2019 and averaged 85 a year from 2016 to 2019.
Belvedere’s nine crimes tied 2024 for the fewest in state records dating to 1985. The city has now gone two straight years without a violent crime and has recorded none in 14 of the past 18 years.
Tiburon police Chief Michelle Jean, responding by email through Capt. Jarrod Yee, said organized retail theft remained one of the department’s most significant property-crime trends in 2025 and credited the town’s revived detective position with advancing its biggest cases.
Belvedere police Chief Jason Wu said nothing changed in 2025 and credited a steady approach for the city’s low crime.
“We believe the trifecta of maintaining (a) low crime rate for Belvedere are high visibility patrols, being familiar with residents and the community and addressing the quality-of-life issues via our signature ‘no call is too small’ philosophy,” he said in an email.
