Neighbors lose bid to roll back pickleball hours at Tiburon Peninsula Club

Expanded pickleball hours at the Tiburon Peninsula Club are here to stay after the Town Council rejected an appeal from neighbors who complained about the sport’s noise and its impact on their homes and lives.

Councilmembers spent nearly two hours hearing from club members and opposing neighbors before voting 2-1 at their June 3 meeting to uphold the Planning Commission’s decision to expand playing hours to seven days a week and allow longer hours in spring and summer. The vote rejected an appeal from Mar West Street resident Eric Pifer.

Vice Mayor Isaac Nikfar and Councilmember Jack Ryan voted in favor, while Mayor Jon Welner cast the dissenting vote, siding with neighbors in saying “there is a qualitative difference with the kind of noise that you get in pickleball” compared with other nearby sounds.

As a result of the council’s vote, the private club will have expanded pickleball hours of 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Saturdays from March 1 to Oct. 31, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. those days from November through February. Mondays had previously been off limits.

Play will also be allowed 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sundays year-round, a 2½-hour increase, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays year-round, a one-hour reduction. Commissioners trimmed the Tuesday hours at their March 25 hearing to give neighbors some respite from the noise.
