Catherine Breed of Strawberry broke the speed record for swimming from the Farallon Islands to the Golden Gate Bridge last week, completing the 30-mile journey in 13 hours, 54 minutes and 10 seconds.

The 32-year-old becomes just the seventh person and third woman to complete the challenging swim, beating a record set in July 2014 by Mill Valley swimmer Joe Locke by just over four minutes. Her claim has not yet been officially certified.

The swim began late Aug. 18 when Breed plunged into the water near Southeast Farallon Island about 10:45 p.m. She battled hypothermically cold water, strong currents, jellyfish stings and the constant threat of white sharks.
