Artwork by Reed Union School District students goes on display Oct. 19 at Tiburon Town Hall in the first of two student shows organized by district visual and performing arts teacher Abby O’Leary.

O’Leary, who has taught in the district for more than 30 years, became its visual and performing arts teacher-on-assignment last school year, a position the district created with state Proposition 28 arts and music funding. She works across the district’s three schools: Reed and Bel Aire elementary schools and Del Mar Middle School. She admired how Mill Valley promoted its school district students’ artwork with public exhibits and decided to try the same for the Reed district.

“We need to create stronger ties with our community, with the local residents to see what is happening in our schools,” she said. “Their taxes, after all, are paying for what goes on in the schools, and I think they should know about all the good things that are happening that they might not otherwise know about.”

Knowing weather can spoil an outdoor exhibit, O’Leary wanted the show indoors. She presented her plan to the Tiburon Heritage & Arts Commission, which approved the two-part exhibit.

The Reed and Bel Aire Fall Art Show runs Oct. 19-Nov. 20 in the lower gallery at Tiburon Town Hall, with an opening reception 5:30-7 p.m. Oct. 20. The Del Mar advanced student art show runs Nov. 24-Dec. 22, with a reception 6-8 p.m. Dec. 1. Both shows are free and open to the public during Town Hall hours.
