Tiburon police plan DUI checkpoint, saturation patrol

The Tiburon Police Department will conduct two impaired driving enforcement operations this week, with an overnight DUI checkpoint and saturation patrols.

The checkpoint will run 8 p.m. Sept. 26 to 3 a.m. Sept. 27 at an undisclosed location, according to a news release. Officers will then conduct saturation patrols from 7 p.m. Sept. 27 to 3 a.m. Sept. 28, actively looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, the department said.

Impaired driving extends beyond alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
