Strawberry wellness center The Portal aims to foster a sense of community

Updated: Aug 16

Anwen Baumeister is a founder and CEO of The Portal in Strawberry, a new wellness center that offers yoga and a ‘biohacking spa’ with a sauna and cold plunge, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and pressure, acoustic and heat-therapy treatments. Drop-ins and memberships are available. (Leo Leung / For The Ark)

Anwen Baumeister was just 13 when she discovered yoga and began practicing five times a week at Bikram San Rafael. She says yoga helped her feel less lonely and isolated growing up in Marin, where she says the hilly topography and the housing layout caused her to feel disconnected from others.

“I think that yoga really helped me find a relationship with myself and others who were on the same journey,” she says.

She later completed yoga teacher training in India and has had a consistent self-practice that she’s always wanted to share with the community.

Now she’s doing just that with the launch of The Portal, a wellness center that opened May 1 at 33 Reed Blvd., behind the Porsche Marin dealership in the Strawberry Village shopping center.

Among its offerings are several types of yoga classes, including a flow class, focused on rhythmic movements; a power class focused on strength building; and a Kundalini class focused on inner energy and awareness.
