Tiburon teen Avery Fisher says the first breath underwater is one of the most special things about scuba diving.

“It’s just such a unique feeling,” she says. “You kind of have to do it to understand it.”

Avery has been training as a scuba diver since she was 10 years old, something she took up as a creative way to get out of the house during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past six years, Avery has clocked hundreds of hours underwater, earning progressive certifications at the Marin Diving Center in San Rafael and practicing diving and swimming at the Tiburon Peninsula Club.

She’s now taking a major step forward in her diving career. In February, she signed as an official ambassador, or “ambassadiver,” with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. The promotional role has her traveling to oceans across the world — from Monterey to the Bahamas to Bora Bora and Tahiti — teaching scuba diving and advocating for ocean conservation. The designation places Avery among a small handpicked group of divers from around the world.
