Tiburon resident Nancy Simmons helped her four-woman relay team set a pending world record in the women’s 65-69 age group 4x800-meter relay at the Down the Stretch Track Fest at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, on May 24.

The Impala Racing Team, consisting of Simmons, Cheryl Bellaire, Julie Hayden and Lesley Hinz, completed the race in 11:47.94, shattering the previous world record of 12:31.46 set last year in St. Paul, Minnesota, by nearly 44 seconds.

Simmons ran lead-off in 2:47.6, the fastest leg of the relay.

The 4x800-meter event requires each runner to complete two laps around a standard 400-meter track. The team consisted of the top four U.S. women over 65 from the World Championships in Gainesville, Florida.

Simmons has been featured in The Ark previously for her competitive running achievements.
